Communications Manager

The core business of Hack Belgium Labs is creating and executing innovation events, predominantly hackathons for professionals in healthcare, defence, sustainability and other industries.

Being the custodian of our brand, making sure the company becomes the reference for outstanding hackathons in Belgium and across Europe, and stays top-of-mind with our potential clients is the core role of the Communications Manager. 

Promoting our events towards potential participants, as well as providing communications support to our clients, is a substantial part of the job as well.   

Tasks will include:  

  • Supporting our Event Managers and other team members in all the communications aspects of the events they are working on, before, during and after the events: 
    • Co-create communications plans and budgets with clients and Event Managers 
    • Design or oversee design of communications materials, from event pages to social media posts and advertising to printed materials  
    • Create or source necessary content, such as interviews (text), podcasts / webinars, live mini-events, for use by our clients and through our own social media channels
    • Prepare event communication kits, share them with event partners, and make sure that the partners communicate in a timely manner  
    • Work with event partners and clients to make sure their communications needs are met 
    • Take part in our events to carry out interviews, create content on the spot, and support Event Managers
  • Developing and executing communications strategy for the company through newsletter, social media presence (bought, owned, and earned), press relations and other channels
  • Constructing and maintaining the sales funnel for all products and services we offer, from event tickets to custom hackathons, in close collaboration with the rest of the team
  • Maintaining and improving the company website with the focus on generating and  capturing leads, as well as accelerating event ticket sales
  • Managing external suppliers: web and graphic designers, content writers, photographers and videographers, PR or growth hacking specialists
  • Managing the overall communications budget and optimize it over time

This role also includes event management tasks, ranging from supporting colleagues to independently handling events. 

Ideal profile would be:

  • Structured, thorough and detail-oriented 
  • Able to work autonomously
  • Pragmatic 
  • Startup mentality
  • Ready to roll up the sleeves and get things done – we don’t always have the budget or the lead time necessary to outsource 
  • Willing to experiment and to learn from mistakes (ideally, other people’s mistakes) 
  • Solid writing skills and an eye for design 
  • Strong affinity with UX and UI design
  • Familiar with:
    • CRM 
    • Project management tools (Asana)
    • WordPress 
    • Photoshop, Illustrator, Canva or similar  
    • Basic workflow automation 
  • Fluent in English, other Western European languages (especially Dutch) are a plus 
  • Prior experience in communications (especially in social media management) is a plus 
  • Online lead generation experience is a plus 
  • Professional or volunteer experience with organising events for 100+ participants is a plus, experience of organizing and participating in hackathons is a big plus

This is a full-time employee position. Collaboration with a freelancer is possible, with minimum contract duration of 12 months and rates adapted to full-time work.
